Sudan atrocities are 'hallmarks of genocide', UN says
The Rapid Support Forces executed a coordinated campaign including mass killings and sexual violence targeting the Zaghawa and Fur ethnic groups, meeting at least three genocide criteria, the UN found.
- A UN‑backed inquiry said Thursday the RSF siege of El‑Fasher bears `the hallmarks of genocide` and reported findings to UN bodies investigating the event.
- After an 18‑month siege, the mission found conditions imposed to destroy non‑Arab communities, with RSF's `exterminatory rhetoric` indicating intent against the Zaghawa and Fur communities.
- Investigators documented more than 6,000 El‑Fasher casualties between Oct. 25 and Oct. 27 and at least 19 women gang‑raped, including women and girls aged seven to 70, while attackers killed at least 300 in Abu Shouk displacement camp.
- The mission called for accountability and urgent civilian protection, warning the risk of further genocidal acts remains serious and ongoing.
- Since April 2023, the Sudan conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 12 million, with the ICC prosecutor warning RSF attacks may amount to war crimes.
