Grasshopper Manufacture Splits With NetEase and Goes Independent Once More
CEO Goichi Suda said the studio wants a wider range of games and stronger self-publishing options after five years under NetEase.
- On Wednesday, Grasshopper Manufacture announced its return to independence from NetEase Games, with CEO Goichi "SUDA51" Suda stating the studio aims to deliver titles in a "wider variety of styles."
- NetEase acquired the developer in 2021, but Suda noted the decision followed thorough discussions with the conglomerate, describing their relationship as "amazing" and expressing openness to future collaboration.
- The split follows the release of Romeo Is a Dead Man earlier this year, an arcade action-adventure about an FBI investigator that Suda said received "high acclaim and great reviews."
- NetEase has been systematically pulling back from the gaming industry following an investment spree that funded Japanese developers, including stopping support for Nagoshi Studios' Gang of Dragon earlier this year.
- It appears unlikely the Chinese conglomerate will continue supporting GPTRACK50, as the studio is self-publishing its upcoming action roguelike Stupid Never Dies later this month.
