MP Should Not Have ‘Hidden Behind Parliamentary Privilege’ on Sturgeon – Gilruth
Davis said Sturgeon knew of Murrell’s spending and used the Salmond case to protect herself as prosecutors found no evidence to charge her.
- On Thursday, Tory MP David Davis accused former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon of lying about her knowledge of estranged husband Peter Murrell's embezzlement, telling the Commons: "My view on her denials is clear: she is lying."
- Last month, Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, was jailed for five years after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 in party funds between 2010 and 2022 for luxury purchases including a £124,000 motorhome.
- Davis alleged that Sturgeon 'stitched up' the late Alex Salmond to hide the embezzlement, claiming the sexual harassment investigation against him was orchestrated as a 'malicious and concerted attempt' to protect her interests.
- Sturgeon's lawyer rejected the allegations, labeling Davis a 'coward' for using parliamentary privilege to spread conspiracy theories, while the former leader consistently denied any knowledge of her husband's criminal activities.
- On Friday, Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth criticized Davis for hiding behind parliamentary privilege, saying he should have aired his views publicly as calls grow for investigations into SNP finances.
