Wednesday (June 4) marks the 36th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party's crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests. Members of the U.S. Congress have spoken out to remember the fearlessness of the Chinese people in 1989 and vowed to continue speaking out for the persecuted groups in China.
Many contemporary witnesses still remember the pain-filled screams of the people on the night of June 4, 1989, the rattling volleys of machine gun fire—and the moment when hope was crushed by chains. While in other parts of the world, June 4 is a day to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre, the police in China are taking people away for a few days as a precautionary measure or placing them under house arrest.
