Hair Extensions Found to Contain Hazardous Chemicals Linked to Cancer, Chronic Illness
Silent Spring Institute found 169 hazardous chemicals in 43 hair extension products, raising health concerns and urging stronger regulation for an industry affecting mostly Black women.
- A new Silent Spring Institute study analyzed 43 hair extension products from online sellers and local beauty stores, detecting 169 chemicals linked to cancer and hormone disruption using advanced chemical testing.
- Researchers say hair extensions are worn on the scalp and neck for weeks and can release chemicals when heated or styled, while over 70% of Black women reported use in the past year.
- Nearly all tested extensions contained flame retardants, phthalates, pesticides, and organotins, while only two non-toxic or toxic-free products were free of hazardous chemicals.
- Several states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are considering measures, and Dr. Elissia Franklin urged, `There are not any ingredients labels on the product, so it leaves the consumer in the dark, and people cannot make informed decisions`.
- Looking beyond the tests, the findings underscore an urgent need for stronger oversight and transparency, as some chemicals appear on California's Proposition 65 list.
