Germany could generate over 600,000 tonnes of PV module waste by 2030 - pv magazine Global
A Fraunhofer CSP study estimates that Germany’s installed PV modules contain 5.35 million tonnes of materials worth billions of euros, highlighting significant recycling potential. More than 600,000 tonnes of PV waste could arise by 2030, but uncertain return volumes may create temporary overcapacity in Germany’s expanding recycling sector. The photovoltaic modules installed in Germany up to 2023 include approximately 660,000 tons of aluminium and 3,900 tons of silver. A study by the Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP on behalf of the German Raw Materials Agency analyses the raw material potential resulting from this for recycling. However, the extent to which the materials can be recovered differs depending on module technology and recycling processes.
