Studsvik Selects GE Vernova Hitachi, Samsung C&T for 1.2-GW Swedish BWRX-300 Project
The partners will begin immediate development work on a four-unit BWRX-300 project that could add 1.2 GW of nuclear capacity, Studsvik said.
On Thursday, September 3, 2026, Studsvik AB announced a strategic partnership with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Samsung C&T to develop a four-unit BWRX-300 project totaling approximately 1,200 MWe in Sweden.
Sweden is expanding nuclear capacity under 2026 legislation permitting reactors beyond existing sites, prompting Studsvik to advance its ReFirm program to address growing demand for baseload power as aging reactors continue operating.
Studsvik leads permitting and community engagement, while GE Vernova Hitachi serves as design authority for the BWRX-300 and Samsung C&T manages construction execution, giving the project single-point responsibility for delivery.
The phased, multi-unit structure aims to standardize deployment and improve cost and productivity outcomes, though the agreement does not constitute a final investment decision or authorization to construct.
GE Vernova Hitachi CEO Jason Cooper described the technology as "moving from first-of-a-kind deployment toward fleet-scale execution," signaling the consortium's broader goal to strengthen Sweden's industrial capability and expand local supply chains.
Samsung C&T has been selected as a strategic partner for the 1.2GW SMR construction project led by Sweden's Studsvik. Together with GVH, Samsung C&T will construct four BWRX-300 nuclear reactors and has agreed to cooperate on the entire process of project development and EPC, aiming for commercial operation in the mid-2030s.
