Strong winds and thunderstorms kick off the bank holiday weekend
The Met Office issued yellow warnings for heavy showers and thunderstorms across parts of England and Wales, effective from midday until 9pm on Saturday during the bank holiday weekend.
This unsettled weather follows a record-breaking summer marked by five heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 38.1 Celsius in London, creating a sharp seasonal transition to cooler, wetter conditions.
Some areas could see 15–25mm of rain in one hour and 30mm within three hours, along with hail and lightning, which may cause localized flooding and train delays.
People attending Reading, Leeds, Creamfields, and the Notting Hill Carnival should expect rain, while the cricket at Lord in London is also likely to be affected by showers.
Monday will be blustery with the strongest gusts of 30–40mph hitting southern areas, while the Environment Agency maintains flood alerts across five areas in the Midlands.
