Storm Floris clear-up after power cuts and travel disruption
SCOTLAND, AUG 5 – Storm Floris caused power outages affecting over 43,000 properties and widespread travel disruptions including flight and ferry cancellations during Scotland's peak festival season, officials said.
- With winds of over 100mph on Monday, Storm Floris caused power cuts to 43,000 properties in the Highlands and north-east of Scotland.
- Pointing to record-breaking gusts and relentless rain from Caithness to the Western Isles, scientists highlight a warming climate fueling more extreme storms.
- Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks reported around 43,500 properties were without power Monday night, and Cirium reported 68 flights were canceled on Monday.
- By Tuesday morning, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks had restored power to 50,000 properties, and engineers reconnected around 22,000 more, while Network Rail reopened 30 of 34 routes.
- Network Rail will soon begin inspections and repairs on affected routes, as a yellow warning remained until 8am on Tuesday with more wet and windy weather expected late Wednesday into Thursday.
