Steve Smith Overtakes Australia Legend Steve Waugh In Massive Test Record
Smith moved past Steve Waugh with 10,945 Test runs and now trails only Ricky Ponting and Allan Border on Australia’s all-time list.
Australian batter Steve Smith surpassed Steve Waugh as Australia's third-highest Test run-scorer on Thursday, reaching 10,945 runs during the opening Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban.
Smith achieved this milestone in 224 innings, 42 innings faster than Waugh, who accumulated 10,927 runs in 260 innings across his 19-year career for Australia.
Facing a difficult opening day, Australia found relief through Matt Renshaw and Pat Cummins, unbeaten on 46 and 33 respectively, after South African bowlers Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen made early breakthroughs.
Smith now trails Allan Border, who holds second place with 11,174 runs, and needs another 229 runs to move into second place during the remaining two Tests.
South African bowler Anrich Nortje challenged the visitors by dismissing Alex Carey and Beau Webster in the same over, demonstrating the strength of the home team's bowling attack.
