Steve Cherundolo to Coach US Men's Under-23 Team Through 2028 Olympics
Cherundolo, a former U.S. defender, will build the roster for the 2028 Summer Olympics after leading LAFC to an MLS title and U.S. Open Cup.
On Thursday, the U.S. Soccer Federation hired Steve Cherundolo as head coach of the men's under-23 national team to prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the United States qualifies automatically as host.
A three-time World Cup veteran and National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Cherundolo brings extensive playing and coaching experience to the role. He played 15 seasons for German Bundesliga club Hannover 96 and managed Los Angeles FC to an MLS Cup title in 2022.
U.S. Soccer chief operating officer Dan Helfrich, who led the coaching search, called Cherundolo a "proven winner" and "elite talent developer." Helfrich said the 2028 Olympics represent a "critical platform to develop our next generation of players."
Cherundolo's primary responsibility involves building a roster for the Summer Games under FIFA regulations limiting players to those born on or after January 1, 2005. Each of the 12 teams may include three wild-card players over the age limit.
This appointment aims to strengthen talent development after the USMNT went 16 years without qualifying for an Olympic tournament before their 2024 Paris Games appearance. Officials view the program as essential for building major tournament experience.
