Stellantis, Leapmotor to move to joint EV production in Europe, deepen partnership
The partners will add Leapmotor and Opel EV production in Spain and seek lower costs through shared parts purchasing and Chinese battery know-how.
- On Friday, Franco-Italian automaker Stellantis and Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor announced plans to expand their partnership from a commercial arrangement to manufacturing cooperation in Europe.
- Stellantis bought a 21% stake in Leapmotor in 2023, forming a joint venture called Leapmotor International where Stellantis holds a 51% stake and Leapmotor holds 49%.
- Production of the Leapmotor B10 SUV and a new jointly developed electric C SUV under the Opel brand will begin at the Stellantis Zaragoza plant in Spain.
- Purchasing auto parts through LPMI will allow the groups to benefit from combined scale and established Chinese know-how in electric vehicle technology, the company said.
- Allocating new Leapmotor models to the Stellantis Madrid plant from 2028 is under consideration, with the potential to transfer the site's ownership to LPMI.
