Stellantis Ties up with Nvidia, Uber to Advance Robotaxi Development
Stellantis will build vehicles with Nvidia and Foxconn’s self-driving systems, deploying 5,000 robotaxis on Uber’s platform starting in the US, production begins in 2028.
- On Tuesday, Stellantis NV announced a collaboration with Nvidia Corp., Uber Technologies Inc. and Foxconn, signing a non-binding memorandum to explore joint development of robotaxis.
- After past project shutdowns, automakers are renewing interest in robotaxis amid expected market growth as the robotaxi market is expected to expand rapidly worldwide in the coming years.
- Technically, Stellantis will build the cab and Nvidia and Foxconn will integrate the autonomous systems using Nvidia's Drive AGX Hyperion 10 architecture with DriveOS, while Uber will operate them.
- Stellantis is targeting 2028 for the start of production of the new robotaxi vehicles, and Uber will initially place 5,000 of the vehicles into service, starting in the United States.
- Notably, Foxconn — the iPhone contractor — will handle hardware integration even as it has mixed auto partnership history, while Stellantis' prior work with Waymo and Pony.ai complements Uber's goal of a 100,000-vehicle autonomous fleet powered by Nvidia in the coming years.
