Investigators say the single-engine Piper Comanche 250 suffered major damage and killed three Ohio residents as officials determine the cause.
On Saturday, a Piper Comanche 250 crashed into a field in Middlefield, killing three people aboard. The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Chardon Post reported the accident occurred at 3:30 p.m., one mile from the Geauga County Airport.
The aircraft was returning to its home base at the Geauga County Airport after a day trip to Youngstown when it went down. Fire Inspector Ben Reed of the Middlefield Fire Department confirmed the plane sustained major damage.
Authorities identified the victims as 76-year-old Thomas Cunningham of Rome, 71-year-old John Taipale of Geneva, and 40-year-old Alexander Taipale of Geneva. All three passengers resided in Ashtabula County.
Emergency responders, including the Geauga County Sheriff and Community Care Ambulance, assisted the Fire Department at the crash site. Officials confirmed no bystanders on the ground sustained injuries during the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified to investigate the cause of the crash. The Chardon Post of the OSHP continues to manage the active investigation.
