State Sen. Larry Selders Dead at 44
The Baton Rouge Democrat had been hospitalized in May for a heart condition, and no official cause of death was immediately provided.
Louisiana State Senator Larry Selders died suddenly on Tuesday night at age 44 after collapsing at his son's football practice, according to family friend Collis Temple. Selders leaves behind his wife, Kendra, and two sons.
Selders had been hospitalized in May 2026 for heart trouble, undergoing a seven-hour surgery to address an aneurysm. He missed the final month of the legislative session while focusing on his recovery.
A social worker focused on mental health, Selders represented Baton Rouge in the 14th District after winning a 2025 special election with 62% of the vote. He had previously served five years in the Louisiana House of Representatives.
Governor Jeff Landry called Selders "a gentle giant who was respected by all," while Congressman Troy Carter praised him as a man of "integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication" to Louisiana.
Mayor-President Sid Edwards called Selders "a man of the people," joining Senator Regina Barrow and Representative Barbara Freiberg in honoring a colleague remembered for his strong work ethic and genuine care for others.
