State Republican convention headed for Duluth
About 3,000 delegates will weigh endorsements for governor and U.S. Senate, with candidates agreeing to accept the party's decision.
State Republicans are set to descend on Duluth this week as approximately 3,000 delegates gather May 29-30 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center to consider endorsements for five statewide offices.
U.S. Senator Tina Smith's decision not to seek reelection has elevated the open Senate seat as a central focus, with the likely GOP nominee expected to face U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the anticipated DFL nominee.
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, Kendall Qualls, and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell lead the gubernatorial field, while Senate candidates include former basketball player Royce White, who lost to Klobuchar by nearly 16 percentage points in 2024; former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya; and former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze.
President Donald Trump said in December that Lindell "deserves to be governor of Minnesota," though Lindell has not committed to abiding by the convention endorsement; political scientist Cindy Rugeley noted Trump-backed candidates' recent primary victories could sway delegates.
Convention delegates, predominantly party activists more conservative than typical GOP voters, remain free to vote as they wish and will also weigh potential changes to the party's platform and governing documents.
