The DWP State Pension Age Change Being Proposed to Help Young Adults Get Jobs
The petition has drawn thousands of signatures and would need 100,000 by Dec. 25 for a parliamentary debate.
Helen Grice launched a petition on the Petitions Parliament website calling on the DWP to lower the state pension age to 65, aiming to encourage early retirement and create job opportunities for young adults.
Campaigners argue that lowering the age encourages older workers to retire, creating vacancies for younger job seekers; the petition needs 10,000 signatures for a government response and 100,000 for Parliament consideration.
A two-year process to raise the State Pension from 66 to 67 began in April, while the OBR has warned that delaying a planned rise to 68 until after 2037 would incur significant government costs.
Pensions minister Torsten Bell recently dismissed OBR claims regarding the timeline for raising the pension age to 68, citing current legislation for the 2040s rather than official Government policy.
Under the Pensions Act 2014, the Government is legally required to review the State Pension age every six years, with the current review ending in 2028 and the petition closing December 25, 2026.
