State Panel Rejects 2 Iowa Libertarians’ Spots on Ballot
The panel said one candidate missed a filing deadline and another used a name that could confuse voters.
- On Monday, the State Objections Panel ruled that Libertarian candidates for governor and the 3rd Congressional District must be removed from the 2026 Iowa general election ballot, sustaining multiple GOP challenges.
- The panel disqualified the gubernatorial ticket headed by Nicholas Gluba because lieutenant governor candidate Jules Cutler failed to file an affidavit of candidacy by the June 2 deadline. Cutler disputed the ruling, claiming she attempted to submit the required paperwork.
- Officials removed 3rd Congressional District candidate Marco Battaglia from the ballot because his nominating papers did not match his legal name, Mark T. Andersen. Battaglia argued he is professionally known by the name used on his campaign filing.
- Regarding the 2nd Congressional District, the panel unanimously dismissed a challenge against candidate Rick Stewart, allowing him to remain on the ballot. Disqualified candidates pledged to appeal the panel's decision in district court.
- Battaglia claimed Republican U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pressured him to exit the race. Analysts at the Cook Political Report rate the 3rd District as a toss-up, making it one of the nation's most competitive races.
