State Department to launch online-only first passport applications in December
The new America.gov portal will also let applicants pay online and track status in real time, Rubio said, as half of Americans already hold passports.
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Tuesday that starting in December, Americans can apply for their first passport entirely online through America.gov, which consolidates 29,000 federal services into one platform.
- The current passport process is a "maze," Rubio said, requiring applicants to print forms, schedule appointments and often hire professional services, even as the passport document itself evolved over time.
- Applicants can upload photos, pay fees and receive real-time status updates through the platform. "No printing forms, no drugstore hostage photo, no appointment," Rubio said, describing the streamlined workflow.
- Starting in 2028, the State Department will debut a redesign called "Flight of the Eagle," with passports arriving in Apple-style packaging and featuring "United States of America" in gold.
- "A passport is more than just a travel document," Rubio said. "It's an expression of the unbreakable bond between the nation and the citizen," reflecting the administration's goal to make processes more accessible for all Americans.
