State to drivers: Give Turtles a Brake!
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton reminded New Yorkers that turtles are nesting in May and June and encouraged motorists to “Give Turtles a Brake.” Turtles are usually spotted on or near roads they search for sandy climates or loose soils to lay eggs and thousands of turtles are killed each year by unsuspecting drivers when turtles cross roads to find nesting areas said Lefton.
