New Zealand Delay Launch of T20 Competition
New Zealand Cricket said the delay gives investors and officials more time to secure licensing and avoid a rushed start.
On Monday, New Zealand Cricket announced the proposed NZ20 franchise league launch is delayed until the 2027-28 season, as organisers require additional time to establish competition foundations.
"With the international schedule now confirmed," NZ20 Establishment Committee Chair Don Mackinnon said, the available window for 2027 is simply too tight due to Test series against Australia and Sri Lanka.
NZC Board Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon confirmed the existing Super Smash competition will continue for the 2026-27 season, allowing the organization to host incoming tours from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Despite the postponement, Mackinnon reported strong progress and growing investor interest both in New Zealand and internationally, while Puketapu-Lyndon emphasized the goal remains ensuring domestic T20 cricket is sustainable.
The decision avoids a rushed launch that could exclude New Zealand's best players, while the NZ20 concept remains the preferred option over joining Australia's Big Bash League.
