Stars forward Mikko Rantanen finished season with torn MCL; team wants Robertson and Benn back
Jim Nill said the torn knee injury kept Mikko Rantanen from being himself and left Dallas facing key roster decisions after a one-round playoff exit.
On Thursday, Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill revealed that forward Mikko Rantanen played through a torn MCL sustained during the Olympics, an injury that sidelined him for 15 games.
In 54 games before the Olympics, Rantanen recorded 21 goals and 51 assists, but he struggled upon returning for the final 10 regular-season games; Nill confirmed he requires no surgery.
"We never had one game where we had a full lineup this whole season and the playoffs," Nill said, citing widespread injuries to Roope Hintz, Tyler Seguin, and Miro Heiskanen.
The Stars face critical offseason decisions regarding restricted free agent Jason Robertson, while longtime captain Jamie Benn contemplates returning for an 18th NHL season.
Dallas ended its season after one playoff round this year, missing the Western Conference final for the first time in three years as the organization prioritizes player recovery.
