In 'Tenzing,' the Everest-Scaling Sherpa Tenzing Norgay Fina
- Apple Studios releases "Tenzing" in theaters this Friday, October 9, before streaming October 16 on Apple TV+, centering on mountaineer Tenzing Norgay's 1953 Everest ascent with Edmund Hillary.
- Director Jennifer Peedom reorients the ascent as a spiritual quest, remedying the historical focus on Edmund Hillary by placing Norgay at the forefront and emphasizing his connection to Chomolungma, the Tibetan name for the mountain.
- Genden Phuntsok portrays the older Tenzing Norgay alongside Tom Hiddleston as Hillary, with the production utilizing cultural consultants and casting real mountaineering Tibetan people to represent Sherpas.
- Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah warned the United Nations last month that Nepal's 15,000 glaciers face threats from climate change, calling the situation "not just a local tragedy, but a warning to the world."
- By centering on Norgay's spiritual connection to the holy mountain, the drama restores the legacy of the Sherpas, who have historically been sidelined in mountaineering narratives.
