Starlink's New V5 Home Dish Is Smaller and More Energy-Efficient
SpaceX says the new dish weighs 2.4 pounds and uses 35 to 50 watts, while the current V4 uses 75 to 100 watts.
- SpaceX quietly released the new Starlink V5 residential dish today, featuring a smaller form factor and lighter design than the previous model. The product is arriving in specific United States regions now.
- Compared to the V4, the new unit consumes less energy, averaging 35 to 50 watts compared to 75 to 100 watts, and reduces weight from 6.5 pounds to 2.4 pounds. It measures 5.12 by 12.05 by 1.34 inches.
- For installers, the V5 is a 'godsend' due to its reduced size, according to Tim Belfall, a director at UK-based Starlink installer Westend WiFi who spoke to PCMag. The unit includes a 'pipe adapter' for rooftops and bundles with the Router Mini.
- Currently, the dish is available only with the least expensive $55 per month Starlink Residential plan, and SpaceX states the V5 is not intended for in-motion use. Select areas receive the device first.
- Elon Musk recently said the dish will be made in 'much higher volume than the current terminals.' As production ramps, SpaceX plans to expand availability, positioning the device to eventually succeed the V4 model.
