Standard Editor Found in Thicket Near Masinga Dam Hours After Reported Abduction
Standard Group said the associate editor was taken from his car by armed men and found safe hours later after an earlier attempt in June.
- Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich was found safe Wednesday morning near Masinga Dam, Machakos County, after being abducted by armed men near Nakuru on Tuesday night, more than 200 kilometers away.
- This incident marks the second time Kiprotich has been targeted within two months. The journalist previously escaped an abduction attempt on June 27, 2026, while driving to work in Nakuru.
- Dashcam footage showed four armed, masked men blocking the journalist's vehicle before dragging him away. Witnesses reported that Kiprotich appeared shaken and injured when found on Wednesday morning.
- Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita condemned the abduction, stating, "This is a really sad thing to happen in a country like Kenya that says it is free." The Standard has criticized President William Ruto's government over alleged corruption.
- Police confirmed they are investigating the abduction's circumstances. Dozens of government critics have been reported missing in Kenya since June demonstrations, despite government denials of state security involvement.
