Stakeholders meet as efforts continue to keep Whitecaps in Vancouver
Stakeholders say improved stadium revenues and a local ownership bid are needed to close a reported $40 million shortfall.
- On Thursday, the Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, three levels of government, and the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations met to discuss keeping the team in Vancouver.
- The Whitecaps have been for sale since December 2024, citing financial challenges at Place, while an investor group submitted a bid to move the team to Las Vegas.
- Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon revealed the province agreed to swing around $3.5 million in revenues to the team, short of Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster's $40 million target.
- Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and Housing Minister Gregor Robertson reaffirmed their commitment, with Robertson stating, "everyone is wearing the same jersey and working toward the same goal."
- Despite these talks, no firm financial pathway exists, though more than 100 potential buyers have been contacted since the team was put up for sale.
