St. Cloud school district will use ChatGPT Edu as part of national experiment

On Aug 26, St. Cloud District 742 granted staff access to ChatGPT Edu, an enterprise platform from OpenAI, joining an exclusive national cohort of 17 states as Minnesota's sole participant.
Superintendent Laurie Putnam stated the platform helps staff with routine tasks like lesson planning. "AI is a tool in a classroom," Putnam said. "Our teachers teach, and they use a variety of tools to do so."
To guide evaluation of AI-generated information, the District implemented the "PAUSE IT" framework, said Katie Herrboldt, district executive director of innovation and instructional technology. Officials prioritized student privacy, ensuring data remains within District control and is not shared with OpenAI.
Teachers can use the tool to differentiate reading levels and create assessment rubrics, while students will not have access. Use of the platform is optional, remaining an additional resource rather than a replacement for professional practice.
"We know students are using it; We need our adults to learn how to use it as well," Putnam said. The District strategy ensures teachers maintain professional judgment while utilizing technology to support student learning.
