- MacDonald arrives from Daemen University in Amherst, where he built a dominant Division II program over 12 seasons. He compiled 265 wins, including a 33-2 record last season and a Division II Elite Eight appearance.
- As the only coach in college basketball history to win more than 100 games across Division I, Division II, and Division III, MacDonald brings extensive experience. He previously coached at Canisius and Division III Medaille, amassing more than 500 total career victories.
- The school is reallocating resources toward player salaries and revenue sharing, reflecting a shift in college athletics. St. Bonaventure will pay MacDonald more than half Schmidt's salary following the program's 17-17 season.
