'Squad' Democrat Formally Introduces Bill to Abolish ICE, Border Patrol and Dismantle DHS

- On Tuesday, Illinois Representative Delia Ramirez introduced the "Reimagining Safety Act," legislation that would abolish the Department of Homeland Security and replace it with a "Department of Community Safety" focused on public health-based approaches.
- Ramirez cited systemic issues within the department, stating DHS has "always been empowered to violate our rights," following reports of at least 57 deaths in immigration detention and eight street killings by agents during President Donald Trump's second term.
- Under the proposal, FEMA and the TSA would move to other departments while the Treasury manages customs duties; the bill would shutter ICE entirely and release detained immigrants within six months.
- A DHS spokesperson criticized the proposal Tuesday, claiming such rhetoric contributes to a "more than 1,300% increase in assaults" against agents as the legislation arrives three weeks before an election where immigration remains central.
- Former senior DHS official Adam Klein told Newsweek that immigration enforcement practices "deserve serious scrutiny," though he questioned the distance between the proposed legislation and essential operational responsibilities that remain necessary.
