Spike Lee was there! Director gleefully recalls attendance at Game 7 of Knicks’ 1970 NBA title
Lee recalled the Knicks’ 1970 title clincher and said the arena noise for Willis Reed still stands out after 56 years.
On Friday, May 8, 2026, Oscar-winning director Spike Lee attended Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in Philadelphia, watching the New York Knicks face the 76ers.
Lee celebrated the date by reflecting on the 56th anniversary of the Knicks' first NBA championship, famously known as The Willis Reed Game, where Willis Reed played through injury to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers.
During the 1970 victory, Reed famously limped onto the court to outjump Wilt Chamberlain, securing the title with a 113-99 win that cemented Lee's lifelong devotion to the team.
The 76ers attempted to prevent a Knicks fan takeover by restricting ticket sales through Ticketmaster and donating seats to local community groups to secure home-court support.
Ahead of Sunday's Game 4, Sixers All-Star center Joel Embiid has pleaded for fan support, with the team planning to host 500 local residents to boost morale.
