Mel C Almost Kicked Out of Spice Girls over Bandmate Spat
Mel C said manager Simon Fuller warned she could be gone after the spat, which left her fearing she had lost her chance at pop stardom.
On the latest episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, Melanie Chisholm, AKA Sporty Spice, addressed former bandmate Geri Halliwell-Horner's past praise of Margaret Thatcher, admitting the comments filled her with "dread."
Chisholm, who grew up in a working-class family in Liverpool with relatives who worked on the docks, found Halliwell-Horner's political stance difficult to reconcile with her own upbringing and values.
The five Spice Girls were "predominantly working class" individuals with distinct experiences, Chisholm said, noting the group was often unfairly "tarred with the same brush" regarding political opinions.
Reflecting on their sudden 1990s fame, Chisholm noted the group lacked media training, describing how they were "thrown to the lions" as young women navigating international stardom.
Chisholm also recalled a 1996 incident at the Brit Awards where a blunt remark to Victoria Beckham nearly ended her career, illustrating the intense pressure the young group faced.
