Speed camera fines to increase in Washington work zones beginning July 1
The change follows more than 85,000 work zone camera infractions statewide as officials seek to slow drivers and protect road crews.
Starting July 1, Washington will increase the fine for a first-time Work Zone Speed Camera Program infraction to $125, up from $0, following a legislative vote last year to strengthen penalties.
Enforcement of the program began at Interstate 5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in April 2025, generating 85,000 infractions statewide, with 77,000 identified as first-time violations.
Washington State Patrol troopers review images for potential violations, which are mailed to registered owners within 30 days; penalties for subsequent infractions remain $248.
WSDOT officials state the cameras are intended to discourage speeding in active work zones, noting that higher fines effectively encourage drivers to slow down and help prevent crashes.
The Work Zone Speed Camera Program recently expanded into eastern Washington and continues adding cameras, with 15 planned for deployment by 2027 to support ongoing safety efforts.
