'Spectacular' Viking burial site discovered in Denmark

  • During construction work in northern Denmark, archaeologists uncovered a Viking burial site dating back to the 10th century, located close to the village of Lisbjerg, which lies about seven kilometres to the north of the city of Aarhus.
  • The excavation was prompted by the accidental discovery of pearls, coins, ceramics, and a gold-threaded box connected to a noble family from a burial site containing around 30 graves from the latter part of the 10th century, during the reign of Harald Bluetooth.
  • The site included about 30 graves, one of which is thought to belong to a notable woman and contained an ornate container holding various decorative items and scissors; nearby, a Viking Age farm was identified during excavations in the late 1980s.
  • Mads Ravn, the museum archaeologist, said, “It’s very rare, there’s only three of them we know of,” referring to the box, and suggested the burial might belong to one of Harald Bluetooth’s earls or stewards.
  • Excavations at the site are expected to conclude shortly, after which specialists will conduct an in-depth examination of the findings; the location highlights Aarhus’s significance as a Viking Age royal and commercial hub, as well as the king’s delegation of regional management to the nobility.
