Spanish police clear migrant camp on Ceuta beach ahead of royal visit
Police moved about 3,000 migrants from the camp as authorities cited unsafe conditions and limited reception space.
- On Sunday, Spanish riot police launched Operation Trampolín, clearing the migrant settlement on Trampolín beach in Ceuta and relocating approximately 3,000 people by bus to temporary reception centres.
- Authorities initiated the clearance to address health risks and contaminated waters before the October 15 eviction deadline, coinciding with King Felipe and Queen Letizia's scheduled visit to Ceuta on October 13.
- Supported by BMR armoured vehicles, more than 350 officers secured the area by sealing access points to prevent escapes or clashes, while interpreters assisted migrants during the relocation process.
- Individuals are being transferred in this initial phase to the Tarajal CATE reception centre, though police warned operations may pause if facility capacity is reached, while some migrants may choose to return to their home countries.
- Following the July arrival of more than 72,000 people from Morocco, the operation addresses the at least 10,000 migrants remaining in Ceuta, an enclave of 80,000 people straining under sustained population pressure.
