Spain sea temperatures hit record highs in summer of 2026, port authority says
Nearly all buoys in the Levante-Balear basin set local records as Spain’s state port authority linked the readings to a summer of extreme marine heat.
- On Friday, Spain's state port authority Puertos del Estado reported sea temperatures reached record highs this summer, with multiple monitoring stations across the Mediterranean and Atlantic coast registering their highest readings.
- Coastal buoys off Tarragona and Barcelona registered 30.7 C and 30.5 C on August 9, while the Dragonera buoy in the Balearic Islands hit a record 33.02 C on August 5.
- According to the weather service AEMET, Spain experienced 61 days under heatwave conditions in 2026, the highest number on record and above the previous peak of 41 days in 2022.
- Scientists warned last month that human-caused climate change is the main driver of these record-breaking sea temperatures, cautioning of severe consequences for marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
