Spain expands migrant shelters in Ceuta to ease humanitarian crisis
After thousands of migrants entered the Spanish north African enclave of Ceuta in July, many who remain, including women, girls and other unaccompanied minors, have struggled with basic food, water, shelter and sanitation needs.
Some 72,000 migrants had crossed the border during an unprecedented and deadly influx to this Spanish territory in North Africa on 30 and 31 July.
Spain is building temporary centers in Ceuta for 1,800 migrants as it seeks to ease the collapse of basic services. The humanitarian crisis is accompanied by a sharp political dispute.
Transfer to these installations is to be carried out from the first hours of this Thursday in a voluntary manner.
