SpaceX’s first Starfall customer is European mission integrator Space Cargo
Space Cargo will place its BentoBox system in the capsule, which can return up to 1 ton of payloads from orbit, the companies said.
On September 15, Luxembourg-based Space Cargo became the first customer for SpaceX's Starfall program, a service designed to return payloads from orbit. Chief Executive Nicolas Gaume confirmed the agreement to Reuters.
Starfall utilizes an aluminum housing protected by a 10-foot heatshield to return research materials from space . The program enters a competitive industry where California-based Varda Space currently operates capsule reentry services with six completed missions.
Space Cargo will integrate its "BentoBox" system into the Starfall capsule, aiming to launch on SpaceX's first commercial Starship mission in 2028. Gaume stated the system will carry up to 1 ton of customer payloads safely back to Earth.
"It's really the volume and the rhythm" that makes this deal key, Gaume added . Space Cargo plans to deploy the BentoBox system on other capsules, including German startup ATMOS Space Cargo's Phoenix craft.
SpaceX aims for unprecedented Starship flight rates once the rocket exits development, positioning Starfall in a growing market. Nearly half of Space Cargo's potential customers for the first mission are in life sciences and biotechnology sectors, where microgravity enables unique research.
