SpaceX launches 12th long-duration crew to International Space Station
NASA and SpaceX expedited Crew-12 launch after a medical evacuation, restoring full ISS staffing for an eight-month mission focused on microgravity research and future space exploration.
- On Feb. 13, SpaceX and NASA launched four crew members from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 5:15 a.m., with docking scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.
- After an unprecedented mid-January medical evacuation, NASA said a crew member's serious but stable condition forced Crew-11 to depart early, leaving the ISS with three crew since last month.
- Propelled by a Falcon 9 rocket, the Dragon spacecraft lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral in visible pre-dawn skies, completing a nine-minute ascent past 17,000 mph while the reusable lower-stage booster landed near Cape Canaveral.
- Restoring the ISS to seven crew members will let experiments and maintenance resume, including scientific experiments on pneumonia bacteria, intravenous fluid generation, and plant health monitoring, NASA says these advance deep-space exploration and Earth benefits.
- As part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, Crew-12 is SpaceX's 12th long-duration ISS flight and includes Jessica Meir on her second mission after the 2019 all-female spacewalk.
