Southwestern Iceland volcano erupts, prompting evacuation of campsite and geothermal spa
REYKJANES PENINSULA, ICELAND, JUL 16 – The eruption is the 12th since 2021 on the Reykjanes Peninsula and prompted evacuations of about 300 people due to lava flows and gas pollution concerns, officials said.
- A volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula began around 4 a.m., Iceland’s authorities evacuated Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, Icelandic Meteorological Office said.
- Experts note the volcano was dormant for roughly 800 years before 2021, with frequent eruptions since then on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
- The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported the fissure, 700–1,000 meters wide, with `witch's hair` fibers that can cause skin and eye irritation, authorities said.
- Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported about 200 guests and 100 residents evacuated, commissioner said evacuation lasted 90 minutes.
- Despite the eruption, Iceland remains open for tourists, with experts warning eruptions could recur for decades.
