Southwest Airlines Is Rolling Out Its First Airport Lounges

On Wednesday, Southwest Airlines announced plans to launch its first airport lounge network in partnership with Chase, with initial locations opening in late 2027 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, and Nashville International Airport.
Following pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management, Southwest is pursuing higher-margin offerings to move beyond its historic one-size-fits-all business model and improve profitability.
Integrating with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network, the lounges will combine sophisticated design and locally-inspired dining, Southwest Executive Vice President Tony Roach said. Access requires a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card launching in 2027.
Southwest plans at least 11 lounges total, marking a significant departure from the airline's long-standing no-frills approach as it emulates loyalty ecosystems used by competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
Across the industry, airlines increasingly rely on loyalty programs to generate stable, high-margin revenue; Delta's partnership with American Express generated more than $8 billion in 2025, illustrating the financial potential of premium lounge access.
