Saints Fan Who Flew From Australia 'Angry' at Play-Off Expulsion
Winnie said his one match for Middlesbrough 33 years ago had no bearing on the unanimous decision to expel Southampton for spying.
On Friday, David Winnie, independent commission member who expelled Southampton from the Championship play-offs, dismissed bias allegations regarding his single appearance for Middlesbrough Football Club 33 years ago, calling suggestions "wholly without foundation."
The commission expelled Southampton after finding head coach Tonda Eckert authorised spying on Boro training sessions ahead of their semi-final. The panel deemed the conduct a deliberate attempt to gain competitive advantage in breach of sporting integrity.
Commissioners labelled the delegation of junior staff to spy as "particularly deplorable," adding that cheating has "no place in the game." The panel unanimously concluded sanctions were necessary to protect league integrity.
Saturday's Championship play-off final will now feature Middlesbrough against Hull City rather than Southampton. The winner secures a place in the Premier League, with the expelled Saints unable to compete.
While the commission defended sanctions as essential to protect integrity, pundits including Alan Shearer and Harry Redknapp described the punishment as "very harsh." Critics argued a significant financial penalty would have sufficed.
