3 Foreign Nationals Sentenced After Surrey, B.C., Home Targeted with Gunfire

Three men pleaded guilty and were sentenced after a shots-fired attack and small fire that police say were tied to extortion.

  • On Tuesday, three men pleaded guilty and were sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court for an extortion-related shooting and fire in the Crescent Beach neighborhood on February 1.
  • Surrey Police Service members assigned to Project Assurance arrested the trio near 28 Avenue and 140 Street shortly after the February 1 incident as they attempted to flee in a rideshare vehicle.
  • Taranveer Singh received five years for reckless firearm discharge, while Dayajeet Singh Billing and Harjot Singh each received 27 and 25 months, respectively, for throwing explosive substances.
  • Surrey Police Service Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton called these the first extortion-related convictions in Surrey, saying they "may actually be some of the first in British Columbia."
  • As of June 8, Surrey police had recorded 122 reported extortions, 19 shots-fired calls, and two arsons, though Houghton noted incidents have dropped significantly in recent months.
