South Korea’s Lee says Trump open to considering phased approach to North Korea nuclear issue
Trump said he would consider a phased plan that first freezes North Korea’s nuclear and missile work before longer-term denuclearization, Lee said.
- On Friday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said he proposed a step-by-step approach to North Korea's nuclear issue to President Donald Trump during their recent meeting in France, prioritizing short-term halting of nuclear and missile programs.
- Lee argued sanctions alone cannot resolve the nuclear issue, noting Pyongyang continues producing enough material for around 10 to 20 nuclear weapons annually while its technology nears final stages, aided by military cooperation with Russia regarding Ukraine.
- Trump responded that Lee's approach "could be one way" to handle the situation, having earlier told Lee it was "time to pay attention" to North Korea and expressed interest in resuming dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
- Separately, Seoul agreed to make $150 billion in shipbuilding investments in the U.S. led by South Korean companies, with Trump asking if South Korea could quickly build 10 U.S. warships during their 90-minute discussion.
- Lee also visited the Vatican, where he asked Pope Leo to consider visiting the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas, an idea the pontiff said he would actively pursue to help facilitate peace.
