South Korean foreign minister urges Cambodia’s leader to fight online scams

- The death of Park Min-ho, a South Korean student, led the South Korean government to send a delegation to Phnom Penh after he was reportedly tortured and forced to work in a scam operation.
- Scam centers in Cambodia employ about 200,000 workers including 1,000 South Koreans, and last month 64 repatriated South Koreans were returned, with around 50 arrested shortly after arrival.
- Last week, Seoul said Cho would press for cooperation and a joint police task force; he met Yoo Jae-Seong, and Cambodia said it is targeting masterminds and tracking finances.
- In recent years online scams have risen sharply, with thousands of victims forced to work in guarded compounds and international criminal gangs using cybercriminal tactics worldwide.
