South Korea condemns attack on cargo ship in Strait of Hormuz, vows response
South Korea said it will join international efforts to secure shipping after forensic experts found hidden stern damage and an engine-room fire.
- On Monday, South Korea's presidential Blue House condemned an attack on the HMM Namu cargo ship this month in the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to respond once the source is identified.
- Experts conducted forensic analysis at a port in Dubai, discovering damage to the vessel's port stern that had caused a fire in the engine room during the attack.
- "We condemn this in the strongest terms," Wi Sung-lac, the South Korean presidential national security adviser, told a news briefing. The HMM Namu was not violating rules in waters off the United Arab Emirates.
- President Donald Trump claimed soon after the incident that Iran fired at the vessel and urged Seoul to join U.S.-led shipping security efforts. The Iranian embassy in South Korea stated it has no position on the matter.
- Tehran has previously denied responsibility for the attack involving a strong impact on the vessel's side, and authorities have not confirmed Iran's role in the incident.
