South Korea Blocks KuCoin, MEXC and 25 Other Crypto Sites
The move extends earlier app restrictions and could complicate withdrawals for users, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the South Korean Financial Intelligence Unit announced measures to block domestic access to 27 websites operated by unregistered crypto exchanges, including KuCoin, MEXC, Phemex, and Bitrue.
- The block targets platforms failing to register under the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information, following reviews by the Korea Media and Communications Standards Commission on Oct. 6 and 7.
- Authorities identify targeted operators by determining if platforms offer Korean-language services or market to South Korean users; the list of blocked sites also includes CoinW, BTCC, BitMart, BingX, and DigiFinex.
- While the FIU acknowledged the website blocks could complicate asset withdrawals for existing users, the agency plans to provide guidance through the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance .
- This move expands ongoing enforcement against unregistered virtual asset operators, following April 2025 restrictions that blocked 14 unregistered crypto exchange apps on Apple's App Store and 17 apps through Google Play.
