Jim Toman, "One of One" College Baseball Coach From Pennsylvania, Dies of Brain Cancer
Toman led Liberty to 204 wins over 10 seasons and later coached Middle Tennessee for four years.
Former Liberty University baseball coach Jim Toman died on Tuesday from complications related to brain cancer. He was 64.
During his nine seasons at Liberty University, Toman led the Flames to their most successful era, securing 35 or more wins in six of those seasons and capturing a Big South tournament title in 2013.
As an NC State player from 1981 to 1984, Toman established ACC tournament records with four home runs, four doubles, and 25 total bases while serving as team captain during his junior and senior seasons.
Legendary college baseball coach Ray Tanner shared an emotional tribute, saying "We are all indebted to you for the impact you made on our lives." Broadcaster Pierce called Toman "one of one."
A private burial is scheduled at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Monroeville, and the family requests memorial contributions be made to the National Brain Tumor Society instead of flowers.
