SA Slams Trump' S ' White Genocide' Refugee Plan as Baseless and Dangerous
The US refugee ceiling for 2026 is set at 7,500, mainly for white Afrikaners, prompting South Africa to dispute claims of racial persecution and white genocide.
- On Thursday, President Donald Trump set the US refugee ceiling at 7,500 for the 2026 fiscal year, prioritising Afrikaner South Africans.
- Earlier this year President Donald Trump authorised a resettlement programme for `persecuted` Afrikaners and framed the offer as for victims of `racial persecution`.
- Reports show limited uptake: less than 500 predominantly white South Africans accepted the offer and 59 were granted asylum in May, which South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation said disproves persecution claims.
- Several months ago South Africa expelled Ebrahim Rasool, South Africa's ambassador to Washington, after he accused President Donald Trump of `mobilising a supremacism`; relations have deteriorated with suspended financial aid and tariffs.
- In a document published on Thursday the administration said the United States refugee system would largely remain closed in 2026 and the department called the `white genocide` claim widely discredited, citing a prominent Afrikaners' open letter earlier this week.
