South Africa Elected to the African Union’s Peace and Security Council
South Africa and Lesotho will represent Southern Africa on the African Union Peace and Security Council from April 2026 to March 2028, supporting Agenda 2063 goals for peace.
- On Wednesday, Somalia secured one of the 10 seats on the AU Peace and Security Council at the summit in Addis Ababa, elected by AU member states.
- The race narrowed after Kenya and Rwanda withdrew their candidacies days before foreign ministers convened in Addis Ababa, as the continent faces unconstitutional changes of government and terrorism.
- Other elected members include DRC, Gabon, Uganda, Morocco, Lesotho, South Africa, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Somalia, which also represents Africa at the United Nations Security Council.
- Somalia Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali tweeted `Grateful to AU Member States for their trust and to our Eastern Africa region for their solidarity` and said `This a historic first for Somalia` as Somalia gains direct influence in AU systems on peace decisions.
- Agenda 2063 calls for intensified peace-making, framing PSC priorities, while South Africa pledged its term will prioritise peace, stability and development within the AUPSC.
