SoundCloud bounces some VPNs as it cleans up cyberattack

Threat actors accessed email addresses and public profile data of about 20% of SoundCloud users, causing VPN disruptions and denial-of-service attacks, the company said.

  • Recently, SoundCloud, audio streaming platform, said it detected unauthorized activity and activated incident response protocols to contain the cyberattack, BleepingComputer reported.
  • The intrusion targeted an ancillary service dashboard, leading to theft of a database containing user information limited to email addresses and public profile information, SoundCloud said recently.
  • Over the past four days, VPN users experienced 403 "forbidden" errors after a configuration change, and denial-of-service attacks with two traffic torrents briefly disabled SoundCloud's web availability.
  • BleepingComputer reports the breach affects 20% of users, roughly 28 million accounts, and SoundCloud engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to strengthen monitoring and identity and access controls.
  • SoundCloud says it has no timeline for full VPN restoration, reporters received tips linking the ShinyHunters extortion gang, and the investigation remains ongoing.
